Welcome!

“The homemaker has the ultimate career. All other careers exist for one purpose only - and that is to support the ultimate career. ”
--C. S. Lewis

Welcome to my course on Housecraft or Career Homemaking 101 or just Homemaking (still working on my title here). I'm so excited to have you join my class--a course where we'll take "the ultimate career" seriously and professionally--and have fun too! Let me tell you what you're in for here.

What this course is

The goal of the 101 course is to make your home a less time-consuming project and more like a tool that serves you as you pursue what's really important to you (family, hobbies, education, professions, etc.). In my mind, "career homemaking" is not giving your life to dishes and laundry full-time; it means that you manage your home and your time such that you can make these activities meaningful while still having plenty of time for other truly meaningful things in life with home as a supportive base. While many homemaking resources are about dedicating your life to supporting your home, this course will instead focus on helping you create a home that supports you and your ideal lifestyle.

The course has some recommended readings and activities, but there aren't any grades. You work at your own pace in a strictly no-judgement environment. Most readings will be free online, but a few, such as Marie Kondo's book Spark Joy: An Illustrated Master Class on the Art of Organizing and Tidying Up, are valuable sources you'll need to find at a library or buy for yourself. While I'll be including links for your convenience, I'll really only recommend buying or borrowing a few key resources that I see as indispensable to your success in this course.

This course will focus on getting personally organized with a vision of what you want out of your life and your home, then help with clearing your clutter and organizing your house for ease of use and cleaning. We'll build simple routines and time-saving habits to keep your home clean and maintained at a steady pace so that you won't have to do marathon cleaning sessions on the weekends. We'll also talk a bit about beautifying yourself and your home.

In the process of taking this course, you and your home will change. This course emphasizes not only the practical skills, strategies, and "hacks" that help run a house, but also focus on changing the way you think and feel about yourself and your home. Ultimately, nothing changes until you do, and this course is about helping you change.

What this course is not

This is a 101-style course. Its goal is to get you a foundation for an orderly, happy home. It's not going to cover everything you need to successfully become a "career homemaker" though. For example, we will not cover lots of cooking skills or food recipes, but we will discuss some meal-planning and strategies to organize your cooking. We'll cover how to make your kitchen more useful as you cook. We will not cover finance and budgeting, but we will discuss skills that will directly impact your financial orderliness and well-being. We will not cover parenting, but we will mention ways you can help your family assist in making your home what you want it to be. Cooking, parenting, finance, and other larger topics such as gardening, wise shopping, home-purchasing, animal care, and so on are essential to a successful homemaking career, but they are beyond the scope of our 101 course. Other key homemaking topics may be covered in future courses to follow.

How to start

Start by reading the introduction and completing the first assignment and readings. Then, feel free to look through each of the tabs above to get an idea of what we'll be covering in the course. I recommend working through each unit and the unit lessons in order, but feel free to skip around if you have something specific you want to work on right away.

I repeat: YOU CAN SKIP SECTIONS, especially if you will get stuck otherwise. I designed this course to work best if followed in order, but you know what you need. If you already have the earlier parts down and want to focus on a later section right away, do it!

I'm excited to be working with you on this wonderful project! Let's get started!
